Skogafoss waterfall on Iceland's South Coast

Single Day South Coast

South Coast Wonders

South Coast Wonders turns the classic southern route into a full private day of water, black sand, sea stacks, local timing, and one stranger edge of the coast: a black-sand drive toward a wooden shipwreck in a landscape that feels far from ordinary Iceland sightseeing.

Itinerary

From waterfall cliffs to black-sand coast and shipwreck.

A long, cinematic day where the route builds from green cliffs and waterfall spray to basalt beach, lunch by the Atlantic, and the wide, alien emptiness of Landeyjafjara before the drive back to Reykjavik.

South Coast Wonders: Meet & drive
01Meet & driveDrive: 2 hours

Meet your guide and follow the coast road south.

The trip begins in the Reykjavik area with a proper meet and greet with your guide and vehicle. Once everyone is comfortable, the route leaves the city behind for the roughly two-hour drive toward Seljalandsfoss, with the guide setting the scene for the farms, mountains, glaciers, and coastline ahead.

South Coast Wonders: Seljalandsfoss
02SeljalandsfossStop: 1 hour

Walk behind Seljalandsfoss.

At Seljalandsfoss, the stop is long enough to feel the place rather than only photograph it. When conditions allow, you can follow the path behind the waterfall and step into the spray, cliff, sound, and open views across the lowlands.

South Coast Wonders: Gljufrabui
03Gljufrabui

Step into the hidden waterfall cave.

Next to Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrabui hides inside a narrow cliff opening. Your guide helps pace the short walk into the cave-like space, where the waterfall drops through rock and mist for a more intimate, unusual South Coast moment.

South Coast Wonders: Skogafoss
04SkogafossDrive: 30 minutes / stop: 45 minutes

Stand below one of the south's most powerful falls.

A short drive brings the day to Skogafoss. It is broader, louder, and more majestic than the first waterfall stop, with enough time to stand at the base, feel the spray, and take in the cliff line that marks the old coastline.

South Coast Wonders: Lunch
05LunchDrive: 30 minutes / meal: 30 minutes

Pause at Black Beach Restaurant.

The route continues toward Reynisfjara and stops for about 30 minutes of lunch at Black Beach Restaurant. It keeps the day practical without losing the feeling of place, with the Atlantic and black-sand coast just outside.

South Coast Wonders: Reynisfjara
06ReynisfjaraBeach: 30 minutes

Walk the black sand with the guide.

After lunch, the beach itself gets time. Basalt columns, sea stacks, black sand, and Atlantic surf are experienced with proper safety awareness, so the stop feels dramatic without becoming rushed or careless.

South Coast Wonders: Landeyjafjara
07Landeyjafjara

Drive onto black sand toward a wooden shipwreck.

Instead of turning straight back, the day moves toward Landeyjafjara, where the vehicle can drive on the beach itself when conditions allow. The goal is a wooden shipwreck and the strange, otherworldly feeling of open black sand, flat light, sea air, and an almost alien coastal horizon.

South Coast Wonders: Return
08Return

Settle into the long drive back to Reykjavik.

The final leg returns to Reykjavik after a full South Coast day. The drive gives the experience room to settle, with time for questions, stories, changing light, and a quieter end after waterfalls, lunch, surf, and black-sand wilderness.
