Intro

The story of Iceland is written in its landscapes and best told through its hiking trails.

Get ready for a trek through time — past ancient glaciers, epic geysers, legendary Viking footpaths, centennial hiker's huts — and uncover the forces that have shaped the Land of Fire and Ice for millions of years.

You'll walk along the same paths that Viking settlers, farmers, explorers, and armies were once using to transit between the north and the south. This path is shrouded in myth and legend, very remote, and was once even full of trolls, elves, ghosts, and outlaws!

Step onto the trail and hike over lava fields, between glaciers, over rivers, and canyons, and at the end of each day, rest your weary feet in cozy huts.

You'll taste traditional dishes and unwind in natural hot springs like travelers of the old. Experience the legacy and history of Iceland in this single hike.

Today, you'll follow the ancient cairns built by the Vikings a thousand years ago, and walk along the Fulakvisl river on the edge of the Kjalhraun lava field while enjoying a spectacular view of the Hrutfell mountain and its gliding glaciers throughout. Watch the Fulakvisl river roar through a very narrow canyon carved out by lava millennia ago. The scenery around the Thverbrekknamuli hut is so incredible you'll want to stay there and explore it for days on end. It's a true highland oasis.

On day 5, you'll hike to one of the oldest mountain huts in Iceland, Hvitarnes. Built way back in 1930, the hut and its turf roof are protected by Icelandic law because of its age and uniqueness. Follow a trail through vegetated areas interspaced by some deep horse trails and crystal-clear water fountains. The hut is close to the Hvitarvatn glacial lake, which runs from the Langjokull glacier and is the source of both the Hvita river and Gullfoss falls. There is an ice cold river just outside the hut, and those who dare may take a dip!

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

This hiking adventure is suitable for all ages as long as you have a decent level of fitness. You'll be hiking for 6 full days, covering around 7.5-10 miles (12-17 km) per day with moderate altitude change while carrying a daypack. The most elevation you'll gain within a day is 600 m (1,970 ft).

One of the best things about this Ancient Trails hiking tour is that it's fully supported — meaning that your luggage will be transported hut-to-hut with a support vehicle, and you'll just have to carry the day's essentials. Keep in mind that the weather and trail conditions may affect the difficulty, and you might encounter several minor river crossings along the trail.

The huts along the trail are simple and rustic, yet offer a reasonable level of comfort. Each one is heated with gas and equipped with basic cooking facilities — limited, but sufficient for preparing meals. Accommodation is in shared dorm-style rooms with bunk beds and mattresses.

Showers are available only on Day 1 & 2, but not beyond that. All huts have toilets, either inside the building or in a nearby separate unit. Capacity in the huts is small, so in most cases, your group will have the space to yourselves. However, a few huts remain open to other hikers and cannot be reserved for private use. Light sleepers are advised to bring earplugs and a sleep mask for added comfort. There are no power outlets in the huts so please bring a power bank.

Staying in huts like these creates a communal atmosphere perfect for connecting with fellow travelers while immersing in the remote beauty of the highlands! You're welcome to help with meal prep if you'd like, join in for card games, or wander and explore the beautiful surroundings — it's all part of what makes this trip so special.

All meals from lunch on Day 1 through lunch on Day 6 are included. Your guides will be preparing and cooking authentic, home-style meals throughout the trip. Water, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate is provided. While breakfasts and lunches are simple but plentiful, dinners are a real highlight — generous, flavorful, and often one of the most memorable parts of the journey.

The menu might change slightly, but here's what your guides are planning at the moment:

  • Arctic char — marinated in lemon and coriander, served with potatoes, coleslaw, and a refreshing dill and mint dressing. (A delicious fish, similar to salmon.)
  • Fried chicken — served with fresh salad, grilled vegetables, and garlic sauce.
  • Fish pie — served with traditional rye bread and butter, this one might surprise you!
  • Icelandic lamb soup — a true Icelandic classic and one of the country's most beloved recipes.
  • Grilled leg of lamb — served with grilled potatoes, fresh salad, vegetables, and rich BBQ sauce, it's a proper Viking feast!

As for special dietary requirements, they can be accommodated — but please let us know well in advance.

Ancient Trails tours run in the summer, from June through September. Temperatures usually range between 5°C and 15°C once in the Highlands — so layering is key! On rare occasions, it can dip as low as -5°C or rise up to 25°C. Iceland's weather is famously unpredictable, so the most important thing is to be well-prepared with proper clothing and gear.

There's really no “perfect” time to visit—each month offers its own unique charm, with changing landscapes, trail conditions, and experiences. Here's what to expect throughout the season:

  • June — Snow patches still linger on the trail, but the landscape comes alive with blooming flowers and vibrant colors. Enjoy nearly 24-hour daylight — perfect for birdwatching.
  • July — The most stable weather of the season. Snow fields mostly gone, warmest and driest month, with minimal wind — ideal for hiking.
  • August — Snow-free trails and the first chances to catch the northern lights as the nights slowly return!
  • September — Crisp, chilly nights with a high chance of seeing the northern lights. The weather becomes less predictable, and the trail feels wilder as autumn approaches.

Boots and clothing

  • Lightweight hiking boots — waterproof with ankle support
  • River crossing shoes — open shoes will not do the job
  • Thermal underwear — long-sleeved wool top and bottom
  • Fleece or wool sweater or jacket
  • Strong and light hiking trousers that dry quickly
  • Jacket — windproof, waterproof, and breathable shell
  • Rain trousers — windproof, waterproof, and breathable shell
  • Fleece or wool gloves and beanie
  • Wool socks
  • Neck buff
  • Swimwear — if you want to bathe in the hot geothermal pools

Gear and luggage

  • Backpack with rain cover for use during the day (20—40 L)
  • Water-resistant duffel bag for the overnight gear (50—100 L)
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (1—2 L)

Erin Fogel★★★★★Norse Adventures did a fantastic job in guiding us along the Laugavegur trail. The scenery is amazingly beautiful. The geological features keep changing and surprising you at every turn. The huts were a fun place to meet other likeminded hikers and travelers from all over the world. Our guide was knowledgeable, fun, and a great cook. He succeeded in making each day better than the last. I highly recommend this trip and Norse Adventures.
Carlene Lawler★★★★★Thanks to Magnus (Norse Adventures) and the team including the beautiful Finress for an incredible experience on the Laugavegur Trail. We travelled from Australia and he picked up our group from the hotel where our journey began. Magnus answered all our questions prior to trip and on the way gave us a detailed overview of the coming days. He had a great understanding of the area, what to expect of the conditions and answered a million questions and requests from our group lol. He offered a helping hand to anyone who needed it during some of the steep declines and river crossings which was greatly appreciated. He took it all with humour and kept smiling. We loved having his beautiful dog with us too. We enjoyed fabulous meals along the way the team shopped for and provided. We all had turns helping with the prep. Would definitely contact Magnus and his team for a hike in Iceland again and highly recommend to others. Incredible experience and trip. Carlene & Tony Lawler Australia
